
The trade relationship between Nigeria and China has reached impressive new levels, establishing it as one of Africa’s highest. Vice President Kashim Shettima commended the ongoing growth of this trade partnership, noting its importance for both nations’ economic progress.
Shettima made these remarks while hosting a Chinese delegation led by Zhang Qingwei, Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress, during a meeting held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. He highlighted the longstanding friendship and mutual respect between the two countries, emphasizing that their relationship has been flourishing for over five decades.
In 2023, trade between Nigeria and China surged to an extraordinary $22.6 billion, demonstrating an annual growth of 33%. Shettima acknowledged the robustness of this relationship, expressing confidence that despite facing economic challenges, the trade ties between both nations continue to thrive. He also reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to supporting China and the significance of their continued collaboration.
Shettima highlighted that Nigeria and China have nurtured a deep relationship since 1971, marked by numerous high-level exchanges, including President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s visit to China in September 2024. These diplomatic visits continue to enhance cooperation, strengthening the bonds between the two nations.
In addition to trade, Shettima expressed admiration for China’s rich culture and the country’s growing global influence. He emphasized the importance of South-South cooperation and called for an even closer engagement between Nigeria and China.
On the topic of security, Shettima shared Nigeria’s ongoing efforts to improve its security infrastructure, seeking China’s collaboration in strengthening the nation’s security system through technological advancements. He stressed the interconnection between peace and development, emphasizing that progress in one area can only be achieved when the other is secure.
Zhang Qingwei, in his address, reaffirmed China’s commitment to elevating Nigeria-China relations to new heights. He referenced the successful Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) and President Tinubu’s state visit, which resulted in a joint announcement to elevate the two countries’ relations to a comprehensive strategic partnership. Zhang expressed China’s readiness to support Nigeria’s economic diversification initiatives and enhance cooperation across various sectors.
As both nations look toward a bright future of collaboration, the commitment to mutual growth, security, and prosperity remains at the heart of their partnership.
