Nigeria has taken the lead in positioning West Africa on the global halal stage through a strong presence at the Malaysia International Halal Showcase (MIHAS) 2025, held on 20th September 2025, organized by MATRADE. The region was represented by 25 buyers — including eight from Nigeria — alongside participants from Senegal, Mali, and Ghana, reflecting Nigeria’s ambition to become West Africa’s halal hub amid rising regional demand for halal products.
MIHAS 2025, a major platform for halal trade, hosted over 4,000 business meetings under the International Sourcing Programme (INSP), generating an estimated RM2.5 billion ($585.6 million) in potential sales.
Malaysia’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, Aiyub Omar, and First Secretary (Trade), Jude Bryan, praised Nigeria’s active involvement, noting it as a sign of stronger bilateral collaboration and the rapid development of Nigeria’s halal ecosystem.
Bilateral trade between Malaysia and Nigeria rose 58.7% in 2024 to $1.52 billion, driven by growth in exports and a sharp rise in imports. Although trade slightly contracted in early 2025, Malaysia’s exports to Nigeria continued to grow, led by palm oil, processed food, and machinery. Nigeria’s engagement at MIHAS underscores its expanding role in the global halal economy and deepening ties with Malaysia.
