Since its introduction, the Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) between South Africa and the United Kingdom has delivered measurable trade benefits, enabling South African exporters to avoid tariffs on goods valued at approximately R50 billion in 2024 alone. These savings have supported export-led growth, employment, and the strengthening of bilateral trade relations.

A recent seminar held in Cape Town by the British High Commission, in collaboration with South Africa’s Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (dtic) and Wesgro, examined how exporters can more effectively utilise the agreement. Discussions highlighted that despite preferential access, South African exports worth R3.8 billion—particularly in beverages, automotive products, and fruits and nuts—were subject to avoidable tariffs in 2024, pointing to gaps in awareness and utilisation of the EPA.

Participants also reviewed sector-specific opportunities in the UK market, particularly for agricultural products, where the UK remains a major destination for South African exports. Case studies, including a female-owned wine exporter in the Western Cape, illustrated how the EPA has facilitated market expansion for firms that have effectively applied its provisions. The seminar focused on translating policy frameworks into practical guidance, particularly for small and medium-sized enterprises.

Key Takeaway/Potential Benefits to African Trade:

The EPA offers substantial tariff savings that enhance the competitiveness of South African exports, particularly in agriculture, automotive products, and beverages, while providing reliable access to the UK market. Improved utilisation of the agreement can unlock additional cost savings, support export growth—especially for small and medium enterprises—create jobs, and encourage economic diversification. By translating preferential market access into practical business gains, the EPA strengthens bilateral trade ties and reinforces export-led growth as a driver of long-term economic development.
