The Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies (NIALS), in collaboration with the Nigeria AfCFTA Coordination Office, recently conducted a one-day capacity-building workshop. The focus of the workshop was to empower legal advisers from various ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs) nationwide, to enhance their roles in the effective implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) agreement in Nigeria.
The event addressed the need for legal advisers to provide essential guidance on complex trade agreements, safeguarding Nigeria’s economic interests during the implementation phase of the AfCFTA.
The workshop included several key sessions:
- Understanding the Scope of AfCFTA Agreement: The first session covered state obligations and the domestic implementation process of the AfCFTA agreement. This presentation highlighted the pivotal role legal advisers must play in ensuring the success of the trade deal.
- Understanding AfCFTA Operational Instruments and Initiatives: A comprehensive review of the AfCFTA’s operational tools was discussed, providing legal experts with the knowledge needed to accelerate its implementation.
- Nigeria’s AfCFTA Implementation Strategies: This session outlined the current strategies and future plans by the Nigeria AfCFTA Coordination Office to ensure Nigeria remains a key player in continental trade.
- The Role of MDAs and Legal Advisers in AfCFTA Implementation: The final session delved into how MDAs and legal advisers can contribute to achieving the objectives of the AfCFTA, while safeguarding Nigeria’s interests.
This capacity-building workshop marks a critical step by the Nigeria AfCFTA Coordination Office towards harnessing the opportunities presented by the AfCFTA, while minimizing potential risks. It aligns with the office’s mission to connect Nigerian businesses to Africa, reinforcing Nigeria’s position in the African trade landscape.
